Partnerships Continuing to Feed the Need During COVID-19

On Wednesday, June 10th, 2020 the St. Louis Food Bank, Project Compassion, NFP, Our local YMCA’s and Living the Word Church partnered together with approximately 20 volunteers including students from several surrounding schools, members of HEALTHIER TOGETHER, and other local organizations to bring a mobile food market to the downtown Belleville area.

This team put together and distributed 100 boxes to Belleville families in need.  The boxes included a healthy assortment of dairy, vegetables and fruit along with toiletries to lend aid during trying times.  Volunteers even went above in beyond delivering boxes to families unable to carry them home themselves.

Fresh produce vouchers that are part of an ongoing effort by HEALTHIER TOGETHER’s Chronic Disease work group were also distributed to the families.  These vouchers are valued at $10 and they supply each family with fresh produce from the local Belleville Farmer’s Market stores.  The Chronic Disease workgroup, made up of members from SIUE, the down town Belleville YMCA, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, and more are working on creating access to healthy food for areas that are otherwise lacking.  This collaborative effort of local organizations within the community is doing their best to ensure that no family goes without.
